The shaft had to be made to a particular design including tail and armature keyways and bearing seats, not just a simple mass-produced piece for which tooling has already been set up. And cutting to that design, heat treating, and grinding back into spec takes a lot of work -- and that's time billed at a skilled machinist's rates.</description>
